Conventionally rat terrier is more of a type than a breed, they are connected to a tough small mixed breed of dogs known as “feists”. This is an American dog breed with a plenty and different background as an all around hunting dog. Some private associations have keep Rat Terriers registries for some decades, now there have a lot of movements for it to be recognized by major canine organizations. They are initially used for ratting and farm work. They are a very versatile companion dog that can hunt rodents and vermin above and below ground and also to course small game. Roots
Origin of this breed originated in Great Britain around the early half of 19th century, originally from Smooth Fox Terriers and Manchester Terriers. It was brought to the USA in the 1890’s in their original color of black and tan. Then they became a common dog throughout America on family farms in the 1920s and 30s, they were also considered as a rare breed. It should be noted that Rat Terrier name was given by Teddy Roosevelt. This breed is very good if not the best in killing rats, there were news of a Rat terrier that killed 2,501 rats in just a span of only seven hours in a barn full of rats. Until now rat terrier is a hardworking farm hand that can remove an infested barn of rats with no problem.
Appearance
Rat terrier is a strong, solid, small to medium size, multi-colored that gives a look of grace and fitness, signifying speed, authority and balance. It also comes in a variety of skin colors and patterns. The common base is black with dotted spotting, but brown and blue tricolors are also common, along with other colors set off by different amounts of white spotting.

When this dog is alert their ears are carried alert, but its upright or tipped when not alert. They are also born with small or full length tails that can be cut off after two days or leave it on its natural state.
Personality
Rat terrier is an alert, affectionate and smart dog. Very curious and energetic breed of dog. They can easily get along with children especially if they are raised since puppyhood. Aside from that, for the most part they are very friendly with strangers, but they make good guarddogs. This breed of dogs is very fast and very playful, but they are not barkers. Other characteristics of these dogs are very much terriers:
