Why does my Miniature Schnauzer Need a Crate?

What is the best Miniature Schnauzer Crate Size . I have always thought that crate training for my Schnauzer would be as quick and simple as buying a crate and putting your dog in it.

However, there is actually a lot that goes into getting your puppy a new crate, particularly for your miniature Schnauzer.

Not only is it an effective housebreaking tool, but it could also help lessen separation anxiety, to thwart their excessive behavior.  It would also be a good way to potty train a dog.

Benefits Miniature Schnauzer Crate Training

When in their crate, they will feel that they are in their territory, unlike when they’re inside the house because it is too big for them to own it.  Likewise, it will also serve as a mobile or portable dog house for travel or moving him from room to room inside the house.

Miniature schnauzer crate training would need much intensive care and involvement, so make sure that you are ready.

Here are a few of the things that you would need to remember when putting your miniature Schnauzer in a crate.

Defining Tasks

The purpose of this training is to teach your Schnauzer, that the crate placed in the corner is his “den” and his alone. Once he understands that the crate is his private domain, you may even find it tough to get him out of it.

Be Prepared

It’s going to take a lot of time and effort on your end if you want your pup to master the art of staying in his crate. In the wild, a dog will look for a cave or pile of downed trees where he can seek shelter from the weather, sleep safely during the night, even raise a family.

A domesticated dog might still have this instinctual need, but since he already lives in a house, the need for shelter is reduced. It falls on you to bring this natural instinct back to the surface, while at the same time teaching him that the crate is his den.

Getting Started

The most significant part of crate training your miniature Schnauzer pup is to get the right size crate for him. Keep in mind that your pup needs enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down but not have extra space to use a part of the crate as a potty area.

While you do not want him to have too much room, when he grows up, he is still going to need more space than he does now. Plan ahead by picking a crate that can be partitioned to smaller sizes for the puppy months, or buy a small crate now than a larger one as your dog grows older.

You need to make this crate as comfortable as possible for your puppy. Cover the floor with soft carpeting, add a nice comfy bed, add a blanket, and of course, a few toys for your pup to play with and chew on. You’re also going to need a lot of nice smelly treats to help with the training and to give your puppy as a reward.

What Kinds of Crate?

Just a tip, if you prefer a Vari-Kennel type of crate and your Miniature Schnauzer is past the puppy phase,  remove the top part of the crate along with the door, this will allow him to go in and out of the crate to let him know that it is alright for him to still go outside.

Spend some time for this every day until your dog gets the hang of it.

However, if your miniature Schnauzer is still a puppy, you don’t have to do this anymore because he’ll accept it right away.

For crate training in a Wire Mesh type unit, it’s a good idea to tie the crate door back so it is always open and would not shut closed.  If the crate has a floor, place something to keep it from rattling, like a piece of cardboard, between the floor.

How to Crate Train

Crate training will begin from buying and preparing the right crate for your Schnauzer.  You will have two options the Plastic one or the Wire Mesh type.

Irrespective of the kind, always see to it that the crate is spacious enough for your dog to:-

· Sit up;

· Stretch out; and

· Stand comfortably.

Again, it’s a great idea to always teach your dog to obey your command, when your miniature schnauzer walks into the crate say “crate” or anything that your dog will recognize that they need to go in the crate.

Remember to use it continuously and constantly reward them each time they follow your command.

Putting things that he loves inside his crate like toys and or a treat will motivate him to stay inside the crate and will make him feel more comfortable.  It will also keep him preoccupied so he would not notice that he’s already inside the crate for a long while.

Make sure to put a clean blanket or cloth for your dog’s beddings.  If the crate is small you can even bring it inside your room. This will make him feel secure that you are still near him and that he’s not alone.

Always praise your miniature Schnauzer whenever he deserves it. Nevertheless, do not overdo it. Remember that anything in excess is not good.

Finally – Puppy Crate Training Tip

If, after several attempts, your puppy still won’t go inside the crate, you’d need to place him in there yourself. However, do not close the crate door. It’s important for your puppy to learn that the crate is his own safe haven and not confinement or prison.

Refrain from closing the crate door during the first several entries as your pup might develop a fear or anxiety toward his crate, seeing it as a bad thing or punishment.

After your puppy enters and exits the crate several times on his own, it’s time to teach him to accept the crate with the door closed. Once you close the crate door, your puppy will undoubtedly cry.

If it does, just ignore your puppy completely. Just sit nearby and watch. When your puppy quits crying, open the crate and praise him or give him, a treat.

Then spend the next 20 minutes playing with your Miniature Schnauzer puppy(while cooking on the grill)!
