Xoloitzcuintli or xoloitzcuintle (pronounces SHOH-loh-eets-KWEENT-lee) and pronounce by some Spanish speakers as sho-lo-skwink-le, also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, is a very unique hairless breed of dog whose size differs greatly. How is Xoloitzcuintli training different from other dog, or will there be any difference since they are hairless?

Xolo’s are native in Mexico, many historic evidences that these breeds have exist for more than 3,000 years. They are considered as sacred dogs by the Aztecs because of its intelligence and loyalty. They also believe that these dogs accompany their master soul in the underworld.

They used Xolo dogs as a home and hunting companion. They were also used as bed warmers because of their natural heat. Xoloitzcuintli Training – General Description

Mexican hairless dogs are recognize in three different categories which are the toy, miniature and also standard that has two varieties the hairless and coated. It is sometimes awkward to say hairless dog because some Xolo have a tiny puff of hair on their head and tail.

However, the coated varieties have furs that are short and sleek, and both of them should not have long and curly hair. Their hairlessness is attributed to their spontaneous mutation thousands of years ago. On average there is one out of every four puppies that are born coated.

Their DNA sequence that is responsible for their hairlessness is also the reason behind their typically incomplete set of teeth, but that DNA will definitely affect Xoloitzcuintli training.

They are commonly black, blue bronze and charcoal, but they also come in different color like brindle, red or frawn. Xolo is reasonable enough in every aspect of its feature, conveying, power, alertness and grace.

Size and Weight

These breeds vary in size from about 10 lbs or 4 kg to 50 lbs or 20kg. While their height is between 10-23 inches.


Xoloitzcuintli usually are very loving, caring and faithful to their owners. They are very protective to their family so they are very alert around strangers. They can get along well with other animals and children but they need be trained ho to socialize at an early age.

Xolo are very intelligent, the reason why the y are very ideal to give Xoloitzcuintli training specially obedience and agility. These breed is not into barking, and they are also not as restless as other small breeds. But they get bored easily, so they really like to be around their family instead of being alone.


As I have mentioned Xolo are very intelligent and very easy to train. But when they are still puppy, they need plenty of attention and discipline in order to train them acceptable behaviour. Xoloitzcuintli will be attached to people who care for him, provides his food, plays with him and of course the one who trains him.

So if you plan on making your Xoloitzcuintli a family dog, it is very vital that everyone in the family will participate in the puppy’s care and training. Or else, you might end up on a “one person’s dog”

Just like other dogs training, Xoloitzcuintli training also involves house training. But some of the owners also choose to paper train small hairless varieties to avoid them of going out in the cold during winter.

If you like to have them outside during winter or just a cold weather they need to have sweaters when they go outside. Crate training will be very effective for Xolo, it will provide them a bed that they grow quite attached to.

Lastly, don’t forget to establish an authority over Xoloitzcuintli since they have a dominant personality. Once you prove who is the boss in the house, they will be very loyal to you and will happily listen to your command. You can improve your Xoloitzcuintli training by always listening to them.
